Both units I’ve been with have refused to order new ones cause these ones are “operational enough.” I really don’t feel like taking my helmet off at all. Itching is more uncomfortable than sweating. Currently, the regular Army issued pads are not too comfortable, especially when you have to wear your ACH for long periods of time (24 hours) straight is the requirement for some of the missions/patrolling that we do. The helmet pads are not soft at all (in fact pretty hard), and start to make your head hurt and even cause headaches with some Soldiers. After a while your ACH starts to get heavy, especially if you’re conducting night ops and wearing NVG’s it can be a lot of pressure bearing down on your forehead, top of head, etc. SSG, US Army.

Comments: We are a RCP/CABT, the guys in the platoon complain of the pads we have are stiff and uncomfortable after long period of time of wearing the ACH. Since we are doing long mission to remove all explosive hazards (IED’s) from the routes we are usually on mission for a long time. 23 Jun 2013 :I’m a husky driver which is a one man operated truck that has a ground penetrating radar in the front of it, I ride in the front of the convoy and make sure there is nothing buried in front of us so that we don’t get hit with an ied. The effect it has on me is that when it gives me a headache I cant just take my helmet off due to the fact I could get hit at any moment. Team members constantly have to adjust or remove helmet to alleviate the discomfort. Often times Team members will not wear their helmet when they really should. (If possible, I would like one of the kits to be a 95080-644-G, PASGT Kit, because I personally have a head that is long front to back & the standard 3/4″ trapezoid pads in my ACH really hurt my forehead. I think the 1/2″ trapezoid pads in the PASGT kit would help with that.)  SFC, US Army.

Comments: The pads we currently have are not failing but not comfortable either. Being that our team mission is directly related to living with the Afghan National Army we have our ACH on 12-14 hours a day and comfort would help ease the pain. Thank you from the [opsec] team New Jersey in advance for your consideration. SSG, US Army.

14 May 2013: Kits: 16. Hometown: Endicott, NY. Heard About us: SGT xxxx OEF X/Afghanistan 2010-2011. Duties: Convoy/Medic. Current Pads: Current Pads are NSN as issued from CIF. As stated, the pads DO cause headaches and discomfort during extended wear. Comments: In theater, everything is extended wear. soldiers purchase COTS headgear, pads, caps and other improvisation to TRY to make the ACH comfortable. it does not help. My friend used your pads in Afghanistan in 2010 and said they really do help. I would like to make sure that my unit has the same protection and comfort during our operations. Of the 180 soldiers in this unit, only about 16 go “outside the wire” regularly and use full tactical gear. The current pads diminish protection as Soldiers CONSTANTLY remove the ACH to relieve the headaches and pain caused by the issued pads. SSG, US Army.

Feedback from the previous entry 14 May 2013: From what I have been able to ascertain during my decade of logistical experience within the Army… they have the right idea, but contradict themselves. Helmet pads are available in varying thicknesses. In theory, you could issue a Soldier a “Medium” ACH and it would still not fit well. By using varying thicknesses, you could match a head to a helmet. That is one theory. The Army chooses the classic “one size fits all” option and issues one thickness of pad. Always. No exceptions. I have gone through CIF and RFI several times. At one location in Germany, I was issue a “Large” helmet and 3/4″ pads. I was “fitted” and that was the determination by the experts. At a different installation, I was “fitted” as a “medium.” Same 3/4″ pads. There is no rhyme or reason. I think that the PEO Soldier… or PM division tries to match high end ideas with a low end budget. Time and again I see equipment that looks good, is based on Soldier demand, and is then produced and thwarted by cheap manufacturing and cost-cutting. If I remember correctly, the RFI process was designed to equip soldiers with items that they frequently purchased with their own money for deployment. Changes in the cold weather equipment, helmet, tactical vest, etc… are a result of this idea. The problem is (in my opinion) funding. Every Soldier has uttered the words “lowest bidder” at some point in their enlistment. Uniform design (millions of dollars of “oh, by the way… the uniform melts to skin”), tactical gear design (it looks pretty), and even basic equipment like the multi-tool are prey to the budget. I am rambling. There is a feedback area built into PEO Soldier. I know that SOME Soldiers are aware, and do post feedback. I have, in the past. I have seen the helmet pads that you provide through your organization. My friend had them in Afghanistan in 2010-2011. They were great. They were effective. I wish the Army would adopt them again.
Thank you so much for your understanding, and for all that you do. SSG, US Army.

10 May 2013: Feedback – Dr. Meaders – Thanks so much for what you do. My element here in AFG rec’d a number of pad sets today. You made everyone’s day. The donors that contribute for your program really do make a large difference for us here.  CPT, US Army

Some of my joes havent changed pads in over a year or so. I’d like to thank you and your staff for everything you guys and gals do for us.
