smell terrible after the first use

Kits: 5. Duties: Infantry mortar. Current Pads: US army standard issue pads.. Comments: The standard issue pads fall apart easily absorb sweat and smell terrible after the first use. Not only that they are stiff and with extended use give me headaches. Spc, US Army

OpHelm note: if the pads smell bad after “first use”, clearly there is something wrong with the concept of using a set of issued pads for as long as a decade. Pads should be replaced as needed and not less than every three-six months. Perhaps every three thousand miles? We do tell troops that they can wash their pads, but reports back indicate that many of the issued pads don’t survive as few as one hand-washing event.
